History of Lefkada
Between Corfu and Kefalonia, Lefkada, the fourth largest island in the Ionian Sea, emerges. A narrow canal, the work of the Corinthians since ancient times, keeps it within striking distance of Acarnania, with which it is easily connected by a floating bridge. Its name is inspired by the cape of Lefkata or "White Tip". The island bears the marks of many civilizations, from the Romans and the Venetians to the French and the British, before becoming an integral part of Greece in 1864. The Prefecture of Lefkada is actually a tiny archipelago of 24 islands. With its emblematic beaches and crystal clear waters, this complex constitutes an earthly paradise that invites the traveler to an endless exploration.
Lefkada Culture
The Lefkada institutions first appeared at the Literature and Art Festival (1955) and the International Folklore Festival (1962), which have operated uninterruptedly to this day, based on the oldest Ionian tradition. Theater, music, exhibitions, conferences, poetry culminate every summer and enhance the culture of Lefkada. The Festivals count dozens of exceptional moments in their history, such as the exceptional appearance of Maria Callas in 1964, her last artistic appearance in public. The island has the oldest (after Corfu) Philharmonic in Greece (1850). The Association contributed to the development of musical education and history. The Lefkada people brought this presence many times to important moments in Greece, such as in 1864 for the Union of the Ionian Islands, in 1896 for the participation in the Athens Olympic Games in 1906 and the participation in the Mesolimpiad. Lefkada is also active in traditional dances, choirs and musicians with national and international visibility.
Nature of Lefkada
The Gyra lagoon is a vibrant ecosystem home to herons, pelicans and wild ducks. Its ring road offers beautiful routes by car, bike or on foot. A central canal divides the wetland in two, with the western part hosting the "ivari", the traditional natural fish farm of the island. On the outer side of the lagoon lie some of the most famous beaches of Lefkada, such as Agios Ioannis, Myloi, Gyra, Kastro and Ammoglossa.
Gastronomy - Lefkadian Cuisine
Lefkada is famous for its excellent gastronomic identity, based on pure local products: oil, honey, citrus fruits and fine wines. The red wine from the Vertzami variety steals the show, being one of the top in Greece. Don't forget to try the traditional liqueurs, with the historical rosoli dominating, but also the traditional soumada that stands out for its bitter almond aroma.
Lefkada cuisine is an interesting blend of Mediterranean ingredients and Venetian heritage. On your table you will find a wide variety of dishes that satisfy every palate, with the following being the most important:
- Sausages: Particularly aromatic and spicy.
- Savoro: A traditional recipe with fish, garlic and rosemary.
- Aliada: The local version of skordalia that accompanies fresh fish.
- Sweets: The island is famous for its mandolato, pasteli and traditional olive pie.
Whether you prefer the relaxed atmosphere of a tavern or the elegance of a gourmet restaurant, Lefkada will pleasantly surprise you.
